michigan. . .this strange place that i now call home

so it is almost spring and we get snow today. my opinion on the subject has gone back and forth. at first i thought it was bad, then it was kinda cool, now i'm not so sure. walking outside after class was like being in a snow ball fight. the flakes were huge and wet and the wind was kicking pretty hard. it reminded me of a conversation i had in high school back in my real home ohio. there was this girl named amy that came from michigan and would tell me often that michigan was a better state than ohio. one of her main points was that ohio didn't have "real snow". her claim was that in mi the snow was dry and powdery. i will admit that i have experienced this "real snow" once or twice, but it certainly isn't the main version of snow here. . .and it certainly wasn't that variety hitting me in the face today.

i have to admit that i gave in to the desire to roll down my window on monday night (when it was still fairly cold). . .which is something that i have mocked others for doing. i was coming home from playing basketball and very sweaty, but i still felt like a hypocrite.

my ncaa bracket predictions were terrible this year. i think i'm scraping the bottom. i picked all of the wrong upsets. i told the kiddies to plan on a 12th seed beating a 5th seed. . .but i didn't think it would be alabama. my only hope at this point is that arizona and north carolina end up in the final game.

i laugh at the coach k commercials for american express. i have a hard time seeing the connection between his philosophy of coaching and his choice in credit cards. i also doubt that he uses his american express card exclusively. . .since it isn't excepted everywhere. what a joke.

helping out with the school play this year. should be a lot of fun. practices have been fun so far. we are doing the importance of being earnest by oscar wilde. having performed in this play in the past, it is a lot of fun to revisit.

oops

i was under the impression that games began today at 12:30, when in actuality they don't begin until thursday. the deadline will thus be noon on thursday. the link again is http://www.daveandnic.com/students/ncaa.

please note, if you are filling in multiple brackets, you need to close all browser windows after filling in one bracket before you fill in another one.

ncaa march madness

for those interested in getting in on the bracket challenge, go to http://www.daveandnic.com/students/ncaa and fill out your bracket. the brackets will be closed on noon tomorrow (tuesday, march 15). . .so please hurry.

the warrior child had a breakthrough in his potty training today. . .in his words he "made a birdie". he was thrilled, we were excited. it was a great time.

the chief apparently got engaged last week. not terribly surprising since charis recently passed the "meatloaf test". now the question comes up: can she make cappacino and sushi?

despite the refs. . .

the ohio state buckeyes defeated the previously-undefeated and #1 ranked illinois fighting illini. being a coach, i usually attempt to take the ref's side of an argument (for the sake of the players who should respect the refs and their decisions regardless of whether they agree with it or not), but it certainly seemed to me that the refs were attempting to keep the buckeyes from getting close. what was especially upsetting was seeing 2 opposite calls against the buckeyes. the first was a charge called when the illinois defender stepped into the shooter. the second was a blocking foul called when dee brown faked a shot, then dipped his shoulder the jumped into the defender (sylvester i believe) who didn't leave the ground or make contact on his own. amazing. the nice thing is that on one can say that osu won because of home-town refs. thad matta does it again (defeats the undefeated). in honor of this victory, someone else should purchase the naming rights to the ohio state gym and rename it. i can't stand the name "value city arena".

a former student comments to me that illinois lost, i tell him, "no, ohio state won. that is the important thing."

moms are missed and frogs can be scary

the warrior child came with me to ohio this past weekend. a man's trip to say the least. . .but by saturday he was missing his mom. . .as was i.
didn't get much done for my mom as i was chasing after the little booger, changing diapers, bathing him, etc. (ok, i know i take for granted that the wife does this with 2 kids every day. . .so no reminders needed), but it was an enjoyable visit. saturday night as he was getting his bath, it was apparent that we had no bath toys. so we improvised with a blue soap dish (which changed into a snake and then morphed into a frog). thinking i was funny, i put it on his back and told him the frog was on his back. he pretended to be amused by this, but after the 3rd round of nightmares that night i realized it was a mistake to pull such a stunt so late at night. lesson learned. every time he woke up he was upset that his mother wasn't there and the 2nd time he woke up he told me he didn't want to sleep in the frog bed anymore.
the ride home was a lot of fun as well. after 20 minutes on the road, i pulled over to the shoulder to let him toss his cookies. (fyi this is the first incident of this kind to take place in the "new" van) again we were both missing mom.

a rather humorous thing happened the other morning that made me proud of my son. i don't have time tonight to tell the story, but you can read it on the wife's blog (http://www.daveandnic.com/nicblog/?view=plink&id=183).
