extra long weekend

nice for teachers and students alike, but both parties find it challenging to get back in the swing of things. . .especially during the last full week of school. next week is finals, then freedom for all. hopefully by then my new equipment will be in and i can start building the new machines. i need to think of good names for them. comment your suggestions for an ibm laptop and dell desktop.

the Lord provided for my plane ticket to denver (the wedding is less than 2 months away now) in what i would consider an unusual way. now i just have to figure out when to fly out and when to return. the chief promises that fares will drop soon. . .i'll keep checking.

i was listening to a radio broadcast the other day and the emergency test came on. why is it that they interupt what you want to hear with this test instead of bumping it in between commercials? i guess this question is rhetorical, but i can't help asking.

last week i was accused of being a racist by one of my students. this came up after a kid at youth group mentioned that he had never eaten a real dog before. i asked him if he had ever eaten at a chinese restaurant. . .and thus i'm a racist. to me this is the same as saying that the french eat snails, but my student is a tad defensive about these things. i accused her of reverse discrimination, but she wasn't sure what that was so i explained it to her and dropped the issue. a while back i was taught to reply, "i'm not racist, i hate everyone the same", but it didn't seem appropriate at youth group.

here is a pic i got out of a computer magazine. odd thing is, i almost had an office like this down in the bubble.

quote of the day

"I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work"
i can identify with this statement. today i found at least 10,000 ways not to show a wan ip address.

i found this interesting article. i could definitely use one of those color matching machines. . .especially for my ties.

what is a quick second?

a support desk worker says on the phone: "hold on a quick second" and then puts my co-worker on hold for a couple minutes. obviously it was longer than a regular second, so i'm puzzled as to how it is quick. similarly, i am confused as to why we call so many restaurants "fast food" - they aren't fast. . .and that isn't really food. which of course reminds me of a history teacher i had that made similar arguments about grape nuts not being grapes or nuts and the holy roman empire not being any of the three.

i saw three letters together that made me laugh (along with the fact that i was up till 3:30 this morning). the three letters: opp. these letters on their own are not at all humorous. but they are tied in my mind to a long-standing joke based on a town in alabama by the name of opp. i'm fairly certain opp has a total population of 8 people, which makes the joke even funnier, but the story is too long to tell tonight and probably not all that funny to those who weren't there.

i got to see the new byers kid. first impressions aren't always right. i'll leave it at that. check out pics at http://thebyers.blogspot.com/ -- especially check out the chin. it is defined and very cool. i was asked if i remember my kids being that small and i said something about not being able to imagine it. . .then the wife reminded me that our kids were never that small. . .at least not outside the womb.

switching roles

my kids (and probably not just mine) think it great to drop things that they know we will pick up for them. . .and then proceed to drop them again. i switched roles this morning with my daughter. she kept handing me things and i couldn't figure out what she wanted me to do with them, so i dropped them on the floor. she kept picking them up and handing them to me again. i guess the game is fun for her no matter who does what.

another jr. sr. finished

what a mess. that is all that comes to my mind when i think about my experience with the jr. sr. fortunately few would've known or noticed. setup was a headache, for reasons i won't mention (or one reason in particular whom i won't name), then things didn't work out the way they were communicated, then the machine that we were going to use for the game and the tribute biffed with some kind of sound card issue. then 30 seconds before the game was supposed to begin, my computer blue screened on me. what a blessing.

jhopkins phantom costume was cool. someone showed up in a rolls limo. . .a bit much. highlight of the night was the coffee bar. i had 2 mochas. sultan stuff. the wife went wild and had the hot chocolate.

the warrior child continues to amuse us in so many ways. the other night we were putting him in bed and he asked for his hook (he is infatuated with captain hook and peter pan, so when my mom gave my wife some bath stuff with a hook on it, he has carried it around as if he is capt. hook) and mentioned that he wanted to take it to bed. i kindly informed him that he wasn't allowed to take it to bed. he gave a very mischievous grin as he stated "i did last night".

spurs to meet the suns in the western conference finals. showdown between offense and defense. actually it would be better to characterize it as explosive offense vs. decent, but often unimpressive, defense. i want to see the spurs pull it off, but can't say that i see it happening. i'll call it suns in 6. miami and detroit in easter conference finals. pistons are better than last year, but they aren't unknown this year. i see the heat taking it in 5.

morning post

so the new kid wakes up at 6:15 this morning. no big deal, except i was trying to get some stuff done for a client and was unable to keep her occupied apart from playing with her or holding her. i've learned that she has 2 basic joys in life (that is, after she is fed and changed): shiny silver objects and pictures. she wanted me to carry her around the house and let her see all of the pictures and touch all of the shiny silver objects. she is especially fascinated with my phone, my thermos, and my diet coke cans. i guess i can be happy about that.
she does like playing with my computer, but usually she just wants to see my desktop or any pictures of herself that i might happen to have open. hard to believe she will be 1 in a week.

new editor. . .

sorry if this post gets annoyingly ugly. i'm trying out a new content editor on my blog as an experiment that will hopefully help one of my clients.

i also want to try out the picture upload capabilities and see how well pics show up in a blog.

research and development is among my favorite pasttimes. . .except after midnight. then it starts to get annoying. i'm also working on a redesign of this site. it served its purpose for a time. . .but i'm getting tired of it and it just isn't the look i was hoping for. i'm hoping the next design will work for a while. i really don't enjoy redesigning as much as it might seem. i'm also working on a facelift for some of my work sites (www.intercity.org, www.dbts.edu, as well as a couple "potential"/new sites that haven't been officially announced yet. don't get your hopes up).

new client sites are also being created/updated. . .and i haven't yet taken the time to work on my portfolio page. maybe next week.

as i type this, i know a couple of students that are taking in the new star wars episode iii. i'm sure if i were in denver right now, i would be tempted to do something similar. . .same goes for eastern pa.

speaking of students, some of the cast are struggling with post-performance depression. if you see a cast member in the hallway, do your best to cheer them up.

here are the pics.

warrior child birthday

today is the warrior child's 3rd birthday. he continues to crack me up and make us all smile. his highlight of the day is getting to go to the dollar store and buy stuff on his own for the first time.

weekend

the weekend was certainly eventful.

friday evening was opening night of the high school play the importance of being earnest. the cast did a great job, despite some dropped lines early in the first act. the ending was huge and many laughs were had by the audience as well as the cast and crew. ad lib line of the night: "this is filthy" dmontero speaking of a table that was earlier cleaned and had its crumbs tossed into the tea by jneal the butler.

saturday the jr. high department went to a tigers game. we had a lot of fun getting to the park and finding our seats. when we did finally climb to the top of the stadium, there were people in our seats. since it was already sprinkling at the park and our seats were under the overhang at the top, a group had decided to sit in our seats. they were nice enough to move to the row in front of us and put on their dry cleaner covers to keep the rain off. the tiggers were playing the los angeles angels of anaheim. someone please explain to me how that is the official name of a real team. we made it to the bottom of the 6th inning, but then the dark cloud was over us and everyone was getting dumped on. half of the park cleared out as the grounds crew tarped the field. they should've stopped the game earlier (when we were ahead 2-0...bonderman was a sultan on the mound), but they waited until the game was tied. the los angeles angels of anaheim eventually went on to win the game, but the tiggers got 'em in the 2nd round of the double-header. . .which i couldn't stay for since there was another performace saturday evening.

as far as lines go, saturday's performance was the best. i'm fairly certain we didn't drop a single line throughout the whole first act. one line that was a little butchered (but worked out ok) was given by khelms: "i believe whenever one has something candid to say, one should speak quite candidly". though the original line was not intended to be funny, the laughter brought about by this bumble was most enjoyable for cast and audience.

some of my students have been asking questions in the "ask the rabbi" section that has just been modified. please feel free to visit and post a question yourself. some faithful melvinists will recall the "ask a cavedweller" section of the chief's intranet spot. perhaps i should re-open that from my archives (aka files for chickens).

by the way, anytime you make a backup, don't call it a backup. put it in a directory called "files for chickens". it is most melvinistic to do so. . .especially if you have a glow-in-the-dark star on your monitor.

tomorrow

tomorrow is friday the 13th. . .but more importantly it is the opening night of the play. goals for the day include walking under a ladder, breaking a mirror, and running over a black cat.

today was seminary graduation. it cracks me up that every year someone asks me how long until i graduate. i generally tell people i'm on the 10 year plan. i'm only taking 4-6 credits at a time so things move slow. i'm not really in a big hurry to get through with school. part of the joy in being here is the opportunity i have to take classes and increase the broad spectrum of subjects that i don't know. recent discussion with the computer teacher confirmed my suspicion that school results in showing us more things that we don't know. the pit ever grows.

had another opportunity today to show a mac user the error of his ways and teach him some of the joys of life in a pc world. i did touch the office mac today to test an app i've been working on at work. concluded once again that mac is a nice toy and a cool office decoration.

the wife believes that i have issues with women. this came up after watching a tv show in which a guy had an issue with a pushy woman. i believe that we all have certain biases and prejudices that affect our perceptions of everything. . .including the biases and prejudices of others. perhaps it is she who has the real issue. . .or maybe it is you.

yesterday this blog was visited almost twice as oftens as the wife's blog. i realize it is only a small victory, but at this point i'll take whatever i can get.

seminary done for a while

the paper is. . .turned in (i can't say finished, because it was actually more-or-less abandoned due to time constraints) and my final exam was this morning. now i can get a little more caught up on sleep. i set a new record: 37.5 hours with no sleep. i don't recommed it.

as far as the paper is concerned, i found myself in agreement with the westminster confession of faith on the topic of infant salvation: "all elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated and saved by Christ through the Spirit." i thought about posting the paper, but it needs work before it is worth reading. i feel sorry for my prof.

here is a wacky picture of the warrior child. somehow he got his shirt off and this is how he got it back on. this certainly brought a laugh and smile to us.

the play is coming up this weekend. tomorrow afternoon is the final rehearsal and then 2 performances (friday and saturday). those in the area should get tickets soon before it sells out. this could be the best school play of this decade.

the warrior child turns 3 next tuesday and the new kid turns 1 in 2 weeks. hard to believe. we sat down with a lawyer tonight to get our wills written. in the middle of our conversation, the new kid honked my nose. without thinking i made the honking noise. fortunately, the lawyer is a friend.

summer vacation is less than a month away. summer plans are starting to get finalized. this could be a very busy summer.

still working on the paper

so microsoft is in a slump and gates accidentally leaked that new xbox is coming out and now they find out that google is going to rival them (probably very successfully) and mac released "tiger". . .what a beautiful day. i still love my pc and i don't much care how much money m$ makes. it is still fun to see other options survive and start to succeed.

paper

not much time. . .still working on my "infant salvation" paper for systematic. feel free to share your opinion on the subject.

interested in a free ipod? you must be 18 or older to qualify for this opportunity. i have a friend who has already earned one through this program.

don't forget to vote on the wife's coat.
