eat spam

there is much to tell of the warrior child, but it will have to wait as i have little time presently.

i have been wanting to share an image of a shirt sent to my department when we ordered a spam filter. . .but have forgotten my camera. then i was given a little digital to play with so i tried it out on the shirt. of course the shirt came in large (which none of us wears), so it has been hanging around the office as a conversation piece. you have to be a melvinist to truly appreciate the greatness of this shirt.

"the better team won"

this is a direct quote from larry brown. nice to finally hear it said by someone from the other side of the floor. what i normally hear from piston fans is that the refs stole the game from them. the fact is that the pistons get away with murder on the court and only get called half the time when they should. rip hamilton should get called for travelling every time he touches the ball. when he makes a move, 45% of the time he should get called for either hooking or pushing off. . .and the list could go on throughout most of the playing lineup. don't get me started on lindsey hunter. one class player for detroit is antonio mcdeyes. he doesn't even fit in with the rest of the team. he outclasses everyone else wearing a piston jersey. wish we could've seen more of darko. perhaps they will send him to the developmental league.

it was nice to enjoy this game with a piston fan. . .almost as nice as enjoying the ohio state buckeyes defeat u of m a few months ago at the home of a u of m graduate. what a great year for sports. now if only the dodgers could get on a major hot streak (they have won their last 2. . .against nl west leading padres).

i was reminded earlier today that i forgot to mention the warrior child's imitation of willy wonka the other day. after watching it once, he went down the hallway and got his blue beach bucket (to imitate the top hat) and a nerf-like melvin-ball bat (to imitate the cane) and he hobbled along eventually dropping the cane and doing a summersault. he even did the little hand thing after dropping the bat. very clever little big guy.

some stuff i would like to say, but must remain silent about. perhaps in coming months all with unfold. though i usually enjoy getting rumors started, this is not a birth announcement.

and still it goes. . .

wow. perhaps this conspiracy thing is more fact than fiction. gets scary when it is predictable. . . but not as scary when it isn't believable. this series has been anything but believable. we aren't talking about 2 equal teams, but we are meant to believe that they are. amazing, but not believable. for the sake of my team, i hope they haven't played around too long to remember how to actually play the game. unless, as some would suggest, the whole season was rigged as well. i can't go that far at this point.

the new kid has me wrapped around her little finger. she knows the right way to smile at me, she knows the right timing, she is a pro at getter her way with me. . .most of the time. i'm just glad her brother is around to balance things out. though he has his way of getting on my good side, he isn't as manipulative and doesn't have the control that she does. recently he has me laughing a lot, especially when he makes a statement then immediately tells me, "say, 'you're right'." and repeats that until i say it.

sad news is that the dr. wants us to keep him away from dairy products for a month and the wife has imposed it on the rest of the family . . . for the most part (check out the wife's blog for the whole scoop). since dairy is perhaps my favorite category in the pyramid, this has been traumatic. the warrior child has endured this for 2 days now. . .i hope he can hold up. it will be tough not to give in.

i was transferring some documents today and noticed a document from my pocket pc titled "things to blog" that i had forgotten to mention here. perhaps the only thing worth mentioning from the file is a moment from a singspiration where the teacher asked what he had taught that morning in sunday school. one of the kids shouted out the book and another kid (i think it was bkirkland. . .whose picture i still need to get) resounded the reference. the teacher, in disbelief, responded 'wow, bill, i'm impressed". to which bill replied, "yeah, i remember it because i couldn't find it this morning."

pics of the new office machines (click for larger picture).

this is doc. . .well, actually these are the 2 monitors attached to doc. i forgot to take a pic of the actual box. it isn't all that exciting to look at.

this is a comparison between my new laptop and the old one. the new one is poc, the ibm t43 on the left (the smaller, pit-bull). the old one is ponytail, the dell latitude on the right (larger, great dane/husky mix).
speaking of dogs, the millner's puppy came to the office today. made for a little excitement.

this is where poc normally sits. . .next to billybob the emac that resides on my desk, but which i try not to use any more than necessary. at one point, i really thought i could be one with the mac. . .but then i realized i would be cutting myself off from 80% of the software in this world that allows me to be productive and happy. so billybob gets used for testing, manipulation of quark files, and anchoring down my desk.

let's keep playing the conspiracy theory game. . .

ok, weird thing is, this is starting to get fun. i can see why people enjoy this kinda thing, but i hope to be through with it after this series. let's suppose that the nba playoffs have all been one big conspiracy. . .but they goofed up and made it too obvious (these guys aren't paid to be actors. . .and l.a. isn't in the mix this year). how do you recover from being obvious when even non-fans are suspicious? give the visitors a close win in over-time. what would make this all too perfect is if the pistons win game 6 in san antonio. not only would it provide extra drama and extra revenue for the league and the teams, but it would also make it appear that both of these teams actually belong in the finals. . .when it is obvious to me that only one team is truly deserving and is a vastly better team than the other. but don't listen to me. . .i'm the guy that is starting to buy into conspiracy theories.
at least robert horry made an appearance for the spurs this year. last year i thought he was split on his loyalties, but turns out he was overworked. this year, this game he was a warrior.

the dodgers stink (as always), but i remain loyal (as always) and the chief ditches them and calls them "hadji's dodgers" (as always). no conspiracy there.

speaking of the chief, you notice by the countdown above that his wedding day draws near. if you see him or talk to him, ask him what the best part of moving is. and if you are considering getting engaged, ask him where to find a ring.

the wife did a great job nursing the family back to respectable health. we aren't back to full strength yet, but we are all eating again and able to sit upright. the warrior children were cracking me up today numerous times. it was perhaps my best fathers day. . .even though i wasn't feeling well. my first-born gets the award for the best card this year. . .especially since he found out how to make the white crayon work. the new kid did try on her card and that was appreciated. both shall be up in my office tomorrow. also, neither of the children were exiled due to bad gifts. the rule is: no ties or socks for fathers day. i would prefer that they get me nothing than that they get me clothing accessories. next year i am hoping for beef jerky. the wife got me a cool bag for poc. i plan on putting it to use tomorrow.

you gotta love great sports

but the nba playoffs have not exactly been great. to someone only looking at the series record (2-2) it might seem that these playoffs have been great. however, a cursory glance at the scores of each of the games shows the true absence of greatness. a great series would be games won by less than 5 points with home court having little or nothing to do with the outcome. even non-basketball fans have been commenting that something seems a little fishy about such vast score margins from court to court. i'm not usually given to conspiracy theories, but this is as close as i've come to leaning on that as an explanation.

my weekend has been unproductive so far. i came home from work feeling ill and it only got worse. i guess it was the flu. nothing pretty that's for sure. i've been a useless "bag of mostly water" moving from one sleep site to another. the warrior children have also been feverish and showing mild signs of the flu. the wife had some of it recently and hopefully will remain strong while the 3 babies of the house recover. i'm told this is only a 24 hour deal. . .but i'm past that and still not back to what i think of as normal.

pictures of my new office machines should be coming soon. doc and poc are working well and i'm been feeling more productive every day. . .until i got sick.

happy anniversary to me. . .and the wife

today marks 6 happy years of marriage. . .and so far no unhappy years (at least not for me).
so we dropped off the kids and went to texas roadhouse. my new favorite sultan steakhouse. because everyone wanted to sit in the non-smoking section, we opted to sit in the "smoking section" (actually no one was smoking, but that was the designated spot if anyone wanted to). it was actually close to the bar and nicole ordered root beer which came in a questionable-looking bottle. kinda funny, but similar to the experience we had on our honeymoon when we ordered fruity drinks and they came looking like margaritas.

i helped a friend move yesterday. he gave me his old ice skates stating "i don't know what i would do with ice skates". i told him, "yeah, i'm having the same thought right now."

the spurs have another opportunity tonight to embarrass the defending champion detroit pistons. i look forward to it.

timelines

ok. . .i fell asleep earlier than expected last night. . .and failed to post the pictures of the timelines. i apologize. i will take care of it in this post.

day one after the school year started off with me sleeping in. i don't know that i have the flu (as my family did this week), but i wasn't feeling my best. the wife was very kind and allowed me to sleep in. hard to believe the school year is over. the big question: who is happier, the students or the teachers?

we put our window air conditioner in yesterday (courtesy of the conn family). the living room was at least 90 degrees. . .and probably over 90, though we don't know how much over since our thermometer only goes to 90. my office in the bungalo is even hotter, so i've setup my office in the living room. the wife has been kind to allow me to do this. i think i'm moving to the basement this afternoon.

the warrior child just asked me to play muse-nic (that is his way of saying music). so exciting it takes a line here.

timelines were all good. if you care, let me know which one you like best.

a great day

school is out for the summer. all my papers are graded. all my end of the year reports have been handed in. and, of course, the spurs demolished the pistons last night. . .which made today such a great day to live in michigan. the same students that were talking serious smack yesterday were strangely silent today. what a blessed day. go spurs.

i will admit that there was a tinge of fear in my heart as the pistons went on a 17-2 point run in the first quarter. for a few minutes i couldn't believe my eyes and began questioning my perceptions about the series. . .but tduncan and mginobili strengthened my resolve. is there really a chance that the pistons could win this series? about a snowball's chance in san antonio. . .not that detroit is much cooler these days. if ginobili were injured, it would be close. if duncan were injured, they could probably pull it off. however, we know duncan is injured, but hasn't allowed it to stop him. i hope it stays that way for 3 more games (or 4 if the pistons eek one out).

kinda ironic that the pistons lost last night at the sbc center in san antonio and today sbc gave us fits with our phones. i doubt the 2 are related, but it is fun to imagine.

age of empires iii comes out in november. . .right before my birthday. screen shots look awesome. gameplay video looks even better. hope it lives up to the hype. hope my computer can handle it. funny thing is that there is a portuguese civilization (which is the hawaiian equivalent to blondes and pollocks in the mainland). recently the chief sent me an email regarding a scaled down version of microsoft windows in portuguese. i guess gates is close to hawaii. . .sorta. closer than i am. perhaps that will be the next phase of acceptable humor now that blonde jokes are pretty much passe. please, don't email me your blonde jokes.

the chief bestowed a great honor on me by asking me to be the best man at his wedding. as has been pointed out in the past, perhaps the title isn't right. "a decent man" would make more sense to me. . .especially since the girl should be marrying the "best man". i'll stick with hadji. that's a safe name no matter what the occasion.

timeline pics to come. . .probably later tonight.

fun week so far

so the power went out at the school monday afternoon. . .which meant no classes for me. wish i hadn't put the tie on yet. regular review day on tuesday, no finals for me to give today, 1 to give to 7th grade on thursday (i guess it is technically thursday now), 1 to give to 8th grade on friday, the the fun really begins.

the wife and warrior child are sick with the flu, so that has changed our schedules a little. that combined with some other projects have impeded my progress on the redesign, but i might release the front page early next week to keep from being a shallow promiser of things that seemingly aren't coming.

some students are a little too excited about the pistons winning the eastern conference finals. for one thing, game 6 proved what miami is without wade and game 7 showed that he wasn't playing at 100%. i'm fairly certain most would recognize that the heat had the better team, but in the end. . .it is the uninjured team that wins out. this has taught me to qualify my predictions. really all the pistons have won is the opportunity to be embarrased by the spurs. should duncan and ginobili stay healthy, i don't see why the spurs will need 7 or even 6 games to polish them off. perhaps the pistons will win one game in the palace, but can't see them forcing this to the limit. . .only the refs could bring that about.

so i took some pics in class the other day and the students are clamoring to see themselves online. . .especially dbarko who wants to see the "flirting" picture of he and lziegler. maybe i will put that on tomorrow. for now, here are some to appease the masses.

fun evening

so the power goes out in the middle of church tonight. kinda freaky. i was on powerpoint, so it kinda goofed us up a bit. then we had the Lord's supper in the dark. interesting.

2 year old class is traumatized by seeing the firewall come down as they went back to their class. the warrior child recounted the entire experience to me tonight before he fell asleep. . .including who cried, what the teachers said, and he concluded his report by informing me that they had a snack after.

came home and the power was out here as well. . .but it has since come back on. we crashed at the in-laws and watched spider man (which is less believable the second time you watch it).

the heat missed dwayne wade last night and got robbed blind without him. game 7 tomorrow. . .almost as if it were planned that way. i'm not usually into conspiracy theories, but something smells fishy here. . .and that weird game 4 in the san antonio/phoenix series. hmmm.

by the way, in honor of the fed ex commercial, i've found it enjoyable to pronounce phoenix phonetically (paho eh nix).

last friday was an interesting day. we had the pizza party for the 7th graders.

then i tried to get a good picture of bkirkland. . .this is one of the best i got.

some of the 8th graders made a mess in the class. . .as usual. (timeline pics to come)

a 7th grader ate a dead fly. . .guess which student it was. this wasn't too gross. what was gross was hearing bhelms explain what all flies land on and what this kid actually ate.

disappointed students

the spurs have defeated the team with the best record and the mvp and the pistons were set back 3 games to 2 this evening. this combination makes for very disappointed students. . .but for this spurs fan who has had to endure the mindless rantings about the "great" pistons, this is exceptionally pleasing news. unfortunately, my prediction that the heat would take it in 5 is obviously impossible, and the pistons tend to do well with their backs against the wall. . .but i don't see them winning 2 games in a row against miami. it will be interesting to see how san antonio matches up against the likes of shaq and wade and i don't know how miami will defend against duncan and horry down low and keep track of the 3-point shooting guards. the pistons would be easy for the spurs to defeat, but we won't get to enjoy that this year.

timeline projects were due today. pictures to come soon.

graduation was tonight. standing ovation for the seniors was a bit puzzling to me, since (to my knowledge and the knowledge of jconn) it hasn't happened before. perhaps most in the crowd didn't think this class would ever make it. we in the faculty didn't know how jconn (aka "the lone sponsor") was going to make it.

the redesign is coming along well. . .i think. a couple of projects and prep for sunday school have kept me from finalizing it. . .and probably will keep me from finalizing it this weekend. i hope to have it live by next wednesday. perhaps by then i will be designing on a thinkpad.
