| sorry, not convinced... heh, that wasnt meant to sound too hostile. if you were trying to sell to me that swimming isnt a sport, i might disagree but i wouldnt mind, but golf is pretty much the most complex sport out of all of them, and the fact that there doesnt even need to be an official defense goes on to prove that its a bit... um... hard, and the recent US Open scores go to show that. If basketball didnt have a defense it would be a slam dunk contest, if baseball didnt have a defense it would purely be hitter vs pitcher, it football didnt have a defense wed probably see a lot of running plays, and i could go on but ill spare you... anyways... | |

| you dont have to be sorry. . .and you dont have to be convinced. since as john saxe points out in the blind men and the elephant blind people can be convinced that an elephant is like a wall, snake, spear, tree, fan, or rope, depending upon where they touch. i think the main point of contention is that you perceive the designation sport to describe something highly important and difficult and you want golf to be perceived by others as highly important and difficult. i am not trying to debate the difficulty of the game at all. . .and i gladly admit that i can't do it very well. . .but i would also admit that hockey is difficult and something i cant do well and i would certainly classify it as a sport. also, please do not confuse complexity with the definition of sport. there are a great number of things that are complex such as music, mathematics, and theology that do not fit the category of sport. i appreciate you bringing up the us open. the lack of course standardization continues to feed my argument. in the nba, every court is the same size and the rims are all set to the same height. in the nfl, the field is the same size and the goal posts are in the same location. and even though in baseball there are varying park designs, the bases are all the same distance apart and the mound is the same distance from the plate. i also appreciate your conceding my point that golf is at best only the equivalent to an offensive half of a sport. as you mentioned, sports such as basketball, baseball and football without defense would cease to be sports. . .so, golf with its lack of defense can not be classified as a sport. keep in mind, this doesnt diminish anything about golf. golf is still as much golf as it ever was. . .just like pluto is still as much pluto as it ever was when it was classified as a planet. re-classifying it doesnt change what it is. |

| kinda funny. 2 guys were arguing about this on sports radio. the more intelligent of the 2 made the point that golf is not a sport. a lot of people called in and said they were surprised that he finally had said something that they disagreed with (since usually everyone agrees with him). should have made them think about their position, but people never want to admit that they are wrong. |
